BANKING.
The following non-Chinese Banks had establishments in the
Colony in December, 1941.
A
1)
The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China.
2)
The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
3) The Mercantile Bank of India Limited.
4) Thos. Cook and Son (Bankers) Limited.
5)
The National City Bank of New York.
6)
The Chase Bank.
7)
The American Express Company Limited.
8)
The Nederlandsche Handelmaatschappij N.V.
9) The Nederlandsch Indische Handelsbank N.V.
10) The Banque Belge Pour L'Etranger.
11) The Banque de L'Indo-Chine.
12) The Yokohama Specie Bank.
13) The Bank of Taiwan Limited.
Besides the above Banks there were some fifteen Chinese Banks
and a large number of native Hongs doing banking business. There
were no Banks which devoted themselves especially to agricultural
or co-operative banking.
In addition to its normal business the Hong Kong and Shanghai
Banking Corporation conducted the business of the Hong Kong Savings
Bank on the usual Savings Bank principles.
Following on the occupation of the Colony the non-Chinese
Banks, with the exception of the Banque de L'Indo-Chine, were placed
under control of the two Japanese Banks who were appointed by the
Military Finance Department to act as liquidators. The Bri ti sh
and Belgian Banks were liquidated by the Yokohama Specie Bank,
the American and Dutch Banks by the Bank of Taiwan.
At a later date it was announced that the pro-Chunking Chinese
Banks, i.e. the Central Bank of China, the Bank of China, the Bank
of Communications and the Bank of Canton, were also to be liquidated,
but it is not known what steps were taken with regard to the other
Chinese Banks and native Hongs.
